Firstly, nothing happened in front of the Appeals Board Thursday that should cause any of us in opposition to feel disappointment. Our greatest enemy is the enemy within: those of us who unconsciously want to find themselves on the losing side must be re-educated right away!
DENSITY HAWKS ARE VULTURES
Any civic activist with a past record of fighting the LA Swarm of Density Hawks must know that when doing battle on the Planning Commission level that the puppet commissioners were annointed/ appointed by Mr. Elegant Density Hawk Himself Mayor Villaraigosa and can be removed at his pleasure at a moment’s notice for voting the wrong way.They are not a jury of our peers. Their backsides are owned by Big RIC – Real-Estate Industrial Complex!
We journeyed to City Hall primarily to place our case on the record for the media to chew on and so that we can lodge a future appeal through the Court System! Our attorney, Mr. Robert Silverstein, did a fantastic job!
Anyone who believes we can triumph on the municipal appeal level is naive! And does more harm than good to our cause by complaining over reversals!
Political naiveté has destroyed more activists’ lives than Cancer!
Remember that the huge investment capital necessary to start building no longer comes from USA as it did in the past. Now investment capital comes from places like Singapore, Macao, Shanghai … The goal is to discourage these global potential investors from pouring Billions of Bucks into Hollywood by pointing out to them the sad past record of those newby mega-investors who got suckered into money dumping in the Hollywood Real Estate Racket and lost their shirts while the long-term local Hollywood middlemen made out like bandits in the phony bargain!
In short, be so unwise as to invest your nest egg here in “HOLLYWEIRD” and get your clock cleaned!
If not Hollywood, where else should the skyscrapers get erected? Our rivals for infusion of mega-investment capital are distant places like Rio, Macao, Adelaide….
Good luck! Go for it! That’s where they ought to be over-built … absent much of the inevitable financial risk and staunch local opposition found in abundance here in L.A.? Okay?
Always keep in mind that militant resident resisters to mega-projects (that’s us!) contribute sizably by our very presence to the mushrooming financial risk, thus deterring potential overseas investors from putting up the massive amounts of money required to build density-busters in Hollywood! Even the New York Times Bureau Chief Adam Nagourney has echoed this warning!
In other words, getting City Council permission to destroy our neighborhood doesn’t mean there is going to be a Billionaire developer somewhere on Earth stupid enough to promptly pump money into double skyscrapers that would end up half-occupied at best…bleeding money profusely from those investors’ pocketbooks! Please pass over us already!
In many other countries, folks like us who openly oppose mega-density projects get eliminated from the scene …one way or another!

May I remind my fellow white people living in Hollywood and opposing the Real Estate Density Hawks (and don’t forget we are overwhelmingly white middle class) that it took Black Americans three hundred years of Blood, Sweat and Tear-Drenched U.S. Supreme Court Appeals with huge popular demonstrations accompanied by thousands and thousands of deaths, before they overthrew slavery which was the Law of the Land when they started their struggle for freedom in the 17th Century.
Those African Americans never allowed “disappointment” to get the better of them! They should be our inspiration never to become “disappointed”!
Garcetti’s public opposition to Millennium Partners’ Pipe Dream no matter how tepid or limited it appeared to be at Thursday’s appeal hearing is now on the record and serves as proof that our side is starting to gain headway on the long March to Victory!
When Garcetti sounds in his Anti-Millennium prepared statement as opposed to the project as John Walsh, believe me, that’s a turning point!
Eric has personally placed an ominous dark cloud over worldwide investment prospects for the Millennium Mega-Project headquartered by Philip Aaron’s in the Big Apple!
This is a precedent! Before Eric Garcetti, no LA City Councilman has ever spoken so pessimistically about a major real estate development in his/her Councilmanic District!
And you can take that to the Bank!

Why has Eric become so frightened of us? It’s been a slow process: Tricky Ricky fears that our opposition to gentrification here in Hollywood will trigger Westsiders to abandon his Mayoral candidacy due to the quite reasonable fear that the same nasty things will happen in their own neighborhoods once Garcetti takes City Hall ultimate power!
Garcetti’s abrupt reversal promises to further damage him voter-wise and future contribution-wise with the Building Trades Unions!
Are we expected to believe that Thursday was the first time Garcetti got a peek at the frightening drawings of those obscenely-tall phallic-like monster towers twice the size of anything ever built in Hollywood?

Here’s the disappointing result of yesterday’s appeal of the Millennium Project go-ahead, from the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association.

Planning commission has denied the appeals by
HHA and other community organizations!
Yesterday, the HHA and other Hollywood neighborhood associations represented jointly by attorney Robert Silverstein went before a hearing of the Los Angeles Planning Commission to support appeal of the over-sized Millennium Hollywood Project before a hearing of the Los Angeles City Planning Commission. HHA president Alex Chavez implored the commission to address Hollywoodland concerns about the proposed construction of such a massive project near the Capitol Records Building on Vine St., and how those giant structures would influence traffic, emergency response services, utility infrastructure, and the overall quality of life throughout our community.
In addressing the commission, Alex stressed that the HHA encourages community revitalization in Hollywood and all the jobs and benefits that that entails. The HHA’s primary objection to the Millennium Hollywood project, he explained, is its scale and its proposed density. Millennium Hollywood has thus far received approval to build two mixed-use buildings of 1.1 million square feet and up to 52-stories in height, and it has thus far gained that approval on a flexible-use basis without detailing the specific designs of those buildings or how they would impact the surrounding community.
